Why does Medico-Legal Information Services charge an up-front retainer/review fee ($500) Two simple reasons.
First, we need to know your case to be able to find suitable and appropriate experts. If you are sure what experts you need, that may not seem to make sense but most lawyers benefit from our analysis. Then there is the matter of presenting the case in understandable form to the expert(s). Many physicians faced with a medical record are not going to spot the real issues. It pays to point out a perspective of the case. Are they to comment on liability or causation or damages? Simply put, a discussion of your case with a prospective expert is the most likely way of getting his help. It also gives us the opportunity to ask questions about the expert's background and experience in the medicolegal arena.
Second, we seek experts whose charges are reasonable and let you negotiate fees directly. We don't add an additional percentage onto the expert's fee. Finding truly qualified experts who don't have the baggage of lots of testimony is a difficult task. The retainer/review fee often amounts to the only fee we make on a given case.
